Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring

Anesthesia

Anesthesia is necessary for animal patients undergoing surgery and other medical procedures. Age, breed, health, and personality are all factors that must be evaluated in order to do the best anesthesia possible. Therefore, each patient gets an individualized plan that incorporates both the latest research and our many years of experience.

Safety

York Veterinary Services uses equipment to measure heart and lung function, intravenous fluids, and maintain normal body temperature using some of the same equipment that is used for humans while undergoing anesthesia.

In older patients especially, we highly recommend a pre-anesthetic blood panel performed before an anesthetic procedure to check the organ function of your pet in order to lessen any possible risks associated with anesthesia. It can be performed days before the procedure through our Idexx partnership or can be performed the morning of surgery.

This blood-work can save the life of your pet, especially if it alerts us to a problem which we would have otherwise not known.

**If your pet is over the age of 7, pre-anesthetic blood-work is required. The veterinarian will discuss the best tests for individual pet needs**
